Juan C. Bernal graduated Cum Laude from the University of Illinois, College of Law in 2017. Prior to attending law school, Juan earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and Philosophy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2012. Juan is also currently pursuing a PhD in Philosophy focusing on Transitional Justice and the source and limits of public authority. Juan also writes on the ongoing peace process and transitional justice efforts in Colombia.



Juan is a member of the American Bar Association, the Illinois Bar Association, the Champaign County Bar Association , and the DuPage County Bar Association. Juan is also a member of the University of Illinois Latino Law Student Association.


Juan is admitted to practice in the State of Illinois and the U.S. District Court for the Central District of Illinois . Prior to joining Beckett Law Office, P.C., Juan clerked for judges in both federal and state courts and served as a judicial extern for the Federal Public Defender’s Office for the Central District of Illinois. During law school, Juan was member of the University of Illinois, College of Law’s Federal Civil Rights Clinic two years in a row, was awarded the prestigious Cultures of Law in Global Contexts Intersect Graduate Fellowship, and was a runner-up in two separate occasions in the University of Illinois, College of Law American Bar Association Negotiations Competition. Juan was also a member of the University of Illinois Senate for four years and continues to serve as a Teaching Assistant for the advanced composition course in philosophy at the University of Illinois.


Juan was born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia (Se Habla Español!). In addition to playing soccer, Juan enjoys reading political philosophy, and watching shows such as Doctor Who and True Detectives.
